Periodontal Surgery for Richmond Patients
Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults in the UK. In its early stages it is painless and easy to miss; by the time teeth start to feel loose, the bone holding them has already been damaged. Periodontal surgery is used when the disease has gone beyond what cleaning alone can reach.
DentEuropa is a private and NHS dental practice on Bath Road in Hounslow, about five miles from Richmond town centre. Gum treatments we provide
Non-surgical gum treatment
Deep cleaning below the gum line (root surface debridement), usually over two or more visits. For most patients this is the first step, and for many it is the only step needed. Surgery is considered only once we have seen how the gums respond. See also our hygiene and cleaning page.
Periodontal flap surgery
Where deep pockets remain after non-surgical treatment, the gum is carefully lifted so the root surfaces and bone can be cleaned directly, then repositioned and sutured. This reduces pocket depth and makes the area possible to keep clean at home.
Gum recession and grafting
Receding gums expose the root, cause sensitivity and can look unsightly. Soft-tissue grafting covers the exposed root and restores the gum margin.
Bone regeneration
Where gum disease has destroyed bone around a tooth, grafting material and a membrane can be used to encourage the bone to rebuild.
Gum disease around implants (peri-implantitis)
Implants can develop the same problem as natural teeth. We treat peri-implantitis and, where an implant has already been lost, plan its replacement.
Crown lengthening and gum contouring
Used both to expose enough tooth for a crown to be fitted and, cosmetically, to correct a gummy smile.
How much does periodontal surgery cost?
Consultation and X-ray: £100. If you go ahead with treatment, the consultation and X-ray fee is deducted from the cost of your treatment – so your consultation is effectively free.

What treatment involves
1. Assessment
A full periodontal examination – pocket measurements around every tooth, bleeding scores and X-rays. You are given a diagnosis, a written plan and a cost before anything is booked.
2. Non-surgical phase
Deep cleaning and coaching on home care. We then wait, usually 8 to 12 weeks, and re-measure. Gum health depends far more on what happens at home than on what happens in the chair, and we would rather prove that first.
3. Surgery
Carried out under local anaesthetic, with sedation available if you are anxious. Most patients return to work the next day.
4. Maintenance
Gum disease is controlled, not cured. Maintenance appointments every three to six months are what protect the result.

Common questions
What is periodontal surgery?
A procedure to treat advanced gum disease. Infected tissue is removed, the root surfaces and bone are cleaned directly, and the gum is repositioned so the area can be kept healthy.
Is periodontal surgery painful?
The surgery itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards most patients manage with ordinary painkillers for two to three days.
How long is the recovery?
Most people return to normal activity the next day. Sutures are usually reviewed after 7 to 10 days, and the gums settle over several weeks.
Will I still lose the tooth?
The aim of surgery is to keep it. Success depends on how much bone is left, whether you smoke, and how well the area is cleaned at home – all of which we discuss honestly with you before you decide.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. We also accept referrals from other dentists.
