Periodontal treatment and gum surgery in Hounslow

Periodontal treatment focuses on the gums and other tissues that support the teeth. Early gum disease may cause bleeding or swollen gums. If it progresses, pockets can form around the teeth and supporting bone may be lost. The right treatment depends on a clinical examination, periodontal measurements and, when needed, dental X-rays.

Surgery is not required for every patient. Many people begin with oral-hygiene support and non-surgical periodontal treatment. Gum surgery is considered only when it is clinically appropriate and after the available options, benefits, risks and likely recovery have been discussed with you.

When should you arrange a gum assessment?

Gum disease can sometimes progress with few obvious symptoms, so regular dental and periodontal reviews are valuable, especially if you smoke, have diabetes, have a family history of gum disease or have previously received periodontal treatment.

What happens at your periodontal assessment?

Your clinician will listen to your concerns and review your dental and medical history. The examination may include measuring the spaces between the teeth and gums, checking gum recession and tooth mobility, assessing plaque and bleeding, and reviewing suitable X-rays. We will then explain the findings in plain language and provide a written treatment plan.

Non-surgical periodontal treatment

This may include tailored oral-hygiene instruction, professional cleaning and deep cleaning below the gum line, sometimes called root surface debridement. Treatment is usually completed with local anaesthetic when needed for comfort.

Periodontal surgery

If deeper pockets or difficult-to-clean areas remain after initial treatment, periodontal surgery may be considered. The aim may be to improve access for cleaning, reduce pocket depth or reshape the gum and supporting tissues. The exact procedure depends on your diagnosis and suitability.

Regenerative and soft-tissue procedures

In selected cases, regenerative techniques or gum-grafting procedures may be discussed. These treatments are not suitable for everyone, and the expected benefit depends on the type and extent of tissue loss.

Support for dental implants

Inflammation and infection can also develop around dental implants. Early assessment is important if you notice bleeding, swelling, discomfort or discharge around an implant.

Gum disease is commonly managed over the long term. After active treatment, regular maintenance visits and effective daily cleaning help keep the condition under control and reduce the risk of further damage.

Frequently asked questions

Can gum disease be cured?

Early gingivitis can often be reversed with effective daily cleaning and professional care. Periodontitis is usually described as a condition that can be controlled rather than permanently cured. Ongoing maintenance is important.

Will I definitely need gum surgery?

No. Surgery is not the first choice for every patient. Your clinician will assess how the gums respond to initial treatment before recommending any further procedure.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

Local anaesthetic can be used during deep cleaning or surgery. Some tenderness or swelling may occur afterwards, depending on the treatment. We will give you clear aftercare instructions and explain when to contact the clinic.

How long does treatment take?

The timescale depends on the severity and extent of gum disease. Care may be provided over several visits, followed by a review to measure the response and plan maintenance.

Can gum treatment save loose teeth?

Controlling infection may improve the outlook for affected teeth, but the result depends on how much supporting tissue has been lost and other individual factors. We will discuss the likely prognosis of each tooth with you.

Do I need a referral?
