What is a night guard?
A night guard, also called an occlusal splint, is a custom-made appliance worn over the teeth, usually during sleep. It may be recommended to help protect teeth and restorations from damage associated with grinding or clenching. Your dentist checks for tooth wear, sensitivity and jaw symptoms before advising whether a guard is appropriate.
Made to fit your teeth
A scan or impression is used to make your appliance. Your dentist checks the fit and bite and explains when to wear it, how to clean it and when to return for review. A guard helps protect the teeth but does not necessarily stop grinding or address every cause of jaw pain. Sleep, stress and other contributing factors may also need assessment. A sports mouthguard has a different purpose and is planned separately.
Guide fee
Custom night guard from £200
The appliance design and final fee are confirmed after assessment.
How should I care for my guard?
Clean and store it as your dentist advises, keep it away from hot water and bring it to review appointments so its fit and condition can be checked.
